Forest Service Hosts Alabama Resource Advisory Committee Meeting

(Montgomery, Ala.) Feb. 15 ----On February 28, 2017, the U.S Forest Service will host the first meeting of the federally designated Secure Rural Schools Resource Advisory Committee (RAC). The advisory committee intent is to enhance community collaboration with federal officials who manage the National Forests in Alabama. The meeting will be held at the USDA Forest Service Office located at 2946 Chestnut Street, Montgomery, Ala. 36107 from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. 

A Secure Rural Schools RAC provides advice and recommendations to the Forest Service on the development and implementation of special projects as authorized under the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act, Public Law 110-343.  

Alabama’s RAC consists of 15 people selected to serve on the committee by the Secretary of Agriculture. Members from throughout the state represent varied interests and areas of expertise.  They will encourage community collaboration between federal land managers by jointly proposing, reviewing and making recommendations regarding proposed projects that will benefit resources on National Forest System lands.  Projects can maintain infrastructure, improve the health of watersheds and ecosystems, protect communities and strengthen local economies.  

The purpose of the meeting is to introduce new RAC Members, discuss the purpose of RAC, operating guidelines and responsibilities, elect a RAC Chairperson and discuss potential projects and processes.
