Forest Service Temporarily Closes South Sandy Shooting Range

The USDA Forest Service has temporarily closed South Sandy Shooting Range in the Talladega National Forest, Oakmulgee District.  The Forest Service is working in conjunction with the Alabama Division of Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries (ADWFF) to make improvements to the shooting range by replacing the cover, shooting tables and other needed repairs.  The South Sandy Shooting Range will be closed for approximately two months.

“The safety of our forest visitors is always a priority,” said Acting District Ranger Gloria Nielsen.  According to Nielsen, while repairs are taking place, no one is allowed to use the shooting range.  “We’re asking the public to be patient and appreciate the partnership and assistance of the ADWFF to help improve the facility for all visitors.”

During the South Sandy Shooting Range closure, the public can enjoy Vick Shooting Range and Payne Lake (West Side). Visit for a listing of public shooting ranges throughout Alabama.
