Tuskegee National Forest Celebrates Free Fishing Day with Free Youth Fishing Derby

Tuskegee, AL June 1, 2018 -The Tuskegee National Forest is teaming up with local agencies to host its annual Youth Fish Derby on June 9, 2018. This Get Outdoors Day (GO) event will take place from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and will be located at Thloko Okhussee’s Big Pond, Tuskegee National Forest 125 National Forest Rd 949, Tuskegee, Ala. 

This year the Forest Service will partner with the Natural Resources Council Planning Committee, the Tuskegee Fire Dept., the Macon County Sheriff’s Department, the National Park Service, and the Alabama Forestry Commission. The goal is to encourage youth to get out and enjoy the great outdoors in honor of National Get Outdoors Day.

The free Youth Fishing Derby event is for youth ages 3-15, who are supervised by a parent or guardian. In addition to fishing, visiting families may also enjoy recreational activities that includes picnicking, hiking, horseback riding (horses are not provided) and camping.

Participants are asked to register and furnish their own bait and tackle to compete in the derby. Registration begins at 7:00 a.m. and fishing will begin at 7:30 a.m. Free food, door prizes and educational programs available at participants as well.
