Allegheny National Forest Proposes Salvage of Downed Trees

Contact(s): Kathy Mohney

The Marienville Ranger District of the Allegheny National Forest is proposing to salvage wind thrown and damaged trees on approximately 200 acres of National Forest System lands in Warrants 3231, 3232, and 3252, Jones Township, Elk County, Pennsylvania. This is another of a series of projects proposed by the Allegheny National Forest to salvage trees that were thrown or damaged by a windstorm on May 1, 2017. This project is named the Brush Hollow 2017 Windthrow Salvage project.

The wind thrown and damaged trees are located in Management Area 2.2 (Late Structural Linkages). Salvage harvesting is a suitable use for this management area. The purpose of this project is to recover the economic timber value that would otherwise be lost if the wind thrown or damaged trees are not salvaged. The scoping letter and map can be found on the ANF’s website: https://www.fs.usda.gov/project/?project=52924.

The 7.7 miles of the Brush Hollow trail system will be cleared of uprooted or damaged trees and the damaged trail sections restored as well. Tree and shrub planting (approximately 7 acres), which may include tree shelter installation and fence cribs to protect the planted trees and shrubs from deer browsing, are being proposed along the sections of trail that will be restored to minimize the visual impacts of the uprooted and damaged trees and impacts from the salvage harvesting. Also, approximately 0.4 miles of temporary road construction using existing unclassified road corridors is being proposed off of Forest Road 302 in Warrant 3231 to access several areas of uprooted and damaged trees. The temporary road will be decommissioned following the proposed timber salvage harvest.
