Allegheny National Forest snowmobile trails to open; ATV/OHM trails remain closed

Contact(s): Collin Shephard

Allegheny National Forest (ANF) snowmobile trails will open on December 11, 2018; however, the Forest’s ATV/OHM trails will remain closed until weather conditions allow for the substantial ground freezing needed to minimize trail impacts. The ANF will send out a news release and post notifications of ATV/OHM status on the Forest’s website (

The ANF has approximately 365 miles of snowmobile trails in interconnected loops, and another 52 miles of trails used for both snowmobiles and ATV/OHMs. Please be aware that maintained snowmobile trails will not be groomed until there is a significant amount of snow on the ground. The ANF’s recreation staff updates the snowmobile trail conditions report every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. The report can be accessed by: * Logging on the ANF’s website: The report is posted on the “Quick Links” section on the right side of the page; or,

* Calling 814.723.5150 and selecting option 2, then following the prompts.

Many of the Forest’s trails are used by multiple user groups, so use caution as you may encounter vehicles, groomers, snowshoers, and skiers at any time. Also, please be advised to use caution when traversing Connector Trail #12 (McCray’s Pond) as there is an ongoing drainage project in progress to alleviate trail flooding. The ANF will monitor this connector and close it if trail and safety conditions deteriorate.
