Forest Service awards Mayburg Bridge overlay contract

On September 23, 2019, the USDA Forest Service awarded Horizon Construction Group, Inc., Sandy Lake, PA, a $582,800 contract to fabricate and place an overlay on top of the Mayburg Bridge.

The Mayburg community is in Forest County, PA, within Howe and Kingsley townships, and includes several permanent residents and over 100 seasonal homes and camps.

The placement of the overlay will allow the Mayburg residents to safely cross Tionesta Creek. The overlay will also allow safe access for heavier vehicles such as emergency management services, snow removal, and utility vehicles.

In addition to the bridge overlay, the USDA Forest Service is working with Collins Pine Company to make improvements to Forest Road 180D, which crosses through private property, to provide alternative access for residents while the overlay is installed.

Currently, Forest County officials are working to replace the Mayburg Bridge outright by seeking funding through the Transportation Improvement Program and/or Commonwealth Financing Authority.

The USDA Forest Service will continue to work with Forest County, Mayburg residents, and other stakeholders to install the overlay and seek funding for a replacement bridge, ultimately conveying ownership of the bridge from the Agency to the appropriate owner.
