Public Involvement

For nearly two years, the public has been involved and engaged in various stages of the development and planning of the Forsythe 2 Project.

What outreach has been conducted so far:

  • Over the winter of 2014-2015, in December and April respectively, two field trips were conducted with interested parties to discuss concerns and desired outcomes of forest management activities.
  • Starting in early September 2015, the district held a 30-day scoping period prior to finalizing the proposed action
  • Postcards announcing the project and pointing folks to online information were sent to some 2000 neighboring residents.
  • Announcements were also made through traditional news media and social media.
  • During the scoping period the district hosted a Saturday open house in the field at one of the units proposed for treatment. Approximately 40 people attended.
  • On Nov. 2, 2015, a group of scientists organized by researcher Tony Cheng held a scientific symposium to discuss the latest science on fire climatology, forest health and fuels treatments.
  • The official public comment period for the proposed action ran from Dec. 31-Jan. 29.
  • On Jan. 11, 2016 a public meeting was held in Nederland to discuss the specifics of the Proposed Action.
  • Oct. 15, 2016, community wildfire forum was organized by Town of Nederland, offering scientific expertise, program information and Forsythe II project information.
  • Nov. 15, 2016, environmental assessment released.
  • Dec. 6, 2015, draft decision anticipated.
  • Dec. 13, 2016, open house planned from 4:30-6:30 in Boulder.
