Contact(s): Tammy Williams

Work is scheduled to begin today on the East Shore Trailhead and parking lot located in the Arapaho National Forest on the east side of Shadow Mountain Reservoir.

Access to the East Shore Trail will be temporarily changed and detoured around the trailhead. Public parking for the trail during construction is available at Hilltop Boating Site parking area.

This work is part of the Sulphur Ranger District’s continued effort to improve the parking lot and trailhead access and completes the improvement work accomplished in the past by Rocky Mountain National Park,  the Town of Grand Lake, Grand County, Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District, and the Headwaters Trails Alliance. Work on the project includes grading and paving the parking lot, landscaping the area and constructing a new bike rack, and an information kiosk pavilion. The project is funded by the Forest Service and fees collected in the Arapaho National Recreation Area and a grant from Rocky Mountain National Park and the Federal Highways Administration totaling $269,000. The trailhead and parking lot work is expected to take three to four weeks to accomplish. .

The East Shore Trail provides access to Rocky Mountain National Park from the Arapaho National Forest and the eastside of Shadow Mountain Reservoir. The trail is part of the Continental Divide Scenic Trail System.
