Snowy roads in May 2017

PLEASE NOTE: It is not always possible to post road closures or openings on the day they occur. Call 970-887-4100 to confirm road status before heading up to your destination.

Vehicle use over wet and muddy conditions can cause significant damage to unpaved roads. Because of this, many roads remain closed this time of year until they can sustainably handle vehicle traffic. Do not attempt roads that are above your skill level. Be prepared in case you become stuck. Have adequate gear and let someone know where you are planning to go.

The Motor Vehicle Use Map (MVUM) will help you ensure you are on a road authorized for the public. This free map is available both electronically and at our district office. The map distinguishes between roads and motorized trails open to non-licensed and licensed vehicles and lists dates when seasonal roads many open and close - if conditions allow. If you come across an open gate on a road that is not scheduled to be open, do not drive that road. Please report the open gate to the district office at 970-887-4100.

There can be a delay of a few hours to a few days between the opening and closing of gates and the postings on this website, especially during our busy field season. We will do our best to keep it updated as soon as changes occur.

Denver Water will be conducting a maintenance and rehabilitation project on the Jim Creek Siphon through November 2018. The siphon is located in the Jim Creek Valley on the east side of US Hwy. 40 across from Winter Park Resort. Each end of the siphon is bounded by NFSR 128/Water Board Road. The siphon was originally installed in the 1930’s and work under this project will extend the life of the siphon and assure that it remains a reliable water conveyance facility.

Some activities on this project will impact travel management in the area. The following road and trail impacts will occur:

  • Segments of NFSR 128/Water Board Road will be closed periodically. Access to the Jim Creek Trailhead will always be available; either from US Hwy. 40 to NFSR 128 or on NFSR 128 from the north.

  • Discovery Trail (N94.1) will be closed Monday – Friday between the Bonfils-Stanton Trailhead and the Jim Creek Campground through the majority of the project duration.

Challenger Trail (N94.2) will be closed Monday – Friday between the Bonfils-Stanton parking area and the Jim Creek Siphon bridge from the beginning of July through the end of the project.
