Apache-Sitgreaves Releases Environmental Impact Statement for Motorized Travel

To comply with the USDA Forest Service Travel Management Rule, Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests (ASNFs) officials propose to provide a system of National Forest System roads, trails, and areas designated for motor vehicle use. This road and motorized trail system will provide access to the forests while protecting physical, biological and cultural resources.

The revised draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) analyzes three alternatives in detail and addresses four specific issues. According to Steve Best, Forest Supervisor for the ASNFs, a draft EIS is a limited scope document and a supplement to the Final EIS. “This document will address public issues raised during the formal objection process of the EIS,” Best said. The ASNFs encourages the public to read the revised DEIS to review the issues and the revised alternatives. Public comments will be accepted during the 60-day comment period that begins August 31 and ends October 29, 2019.

The ASNFs values public participation, and has created interactive and informational websites. Open house public meetings will provide a self-guided setting where the public can browse the information. Subject matter experts will also be on-hand to answer questions.
