Nesting Bald Eagle Closure on Alpine Ranger District

Springerville, AZ; January 12, 2018 – For Immediate Release. An area closure for the protection of nesting bald eagles has gone into effect at Luna Lake on the Alpine Ranger District of the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. The Luna Lake Bald Eagle breeding area is closed to all entry from January 1 through June 30, 2018. Going into or being upon the restricted area is prohibited. Violations are punishable by a fine of not more than $5,000 for individuals and $10,000 for organizations, imprisonment for not more than six (6) months, or both. [16 USC 551, 18 USC 3559, 3571 and 3581].

Threatened, Endangered and Sensitive Species Protection closures are needed in frequently visited areas because noise is likely to have a negative impact on the nesting and fledging bald eagles. Signs are posted in the closure area, and details on Forest Order 01-14-571 are posted on the Apache-Sitgreaves website.
