Multiple Fires on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests

Springerville, AZ—August 2, 2018 The Grama Fire was reported on Tuesday, July 17, 2018. Approximately 16 miles northwest of Forest Lakes, Coconino County, Arizona on the Black Mesa Ranger District in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. The lightning-caused Grama Fire is being managed to fulfill the natural role in the forest ecosystem. The fire is about 1,061 acres, (change in acreage do to better mapping) burning in mostly ponderosa pine with a timber understory, Gambel oak, and pinon/juniper. Fire crews were not able to finalize the hand ignitions yesterday. Little precipitation fell on the fire area yesterday giving them the opportunity to try and complete those operations today. The final anticipated project area for the Grama Fire is approximately 2,153 acres.

The Ranch Fire was reported on Tuesday, July 24, 2018. Located about 25 miles south of Winslow, Coconino County, Arizona on the Black Mesa Ranger District in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. The lightning-caused fire is approximately 4,081 acres. It is also being managed to attain the natural role of fire in the forest ecosystem. The total completed project area is estimated to be around 11,570 acres. Due to the heavy precipitation the Ranch Fire received yesterday, crews will not be initiating any ignitions today, they will be monitoring and patrolling the perimeter.

The Hub Point Fire was reported on July 27, 2018. Situated two miles east of Pinedale, Navajo County, Arizona on the Lakeside Ranger District in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. At about 1300 acres, it is burning in timber, brush and short grass, with moderate fire behavior. Due to the fire receiving moderate precipitation yesterday, crews will be monitoring and patrolling the fire perimeter today. The fire manager’s strategy is to use this lightning-caused fire for multiple objectives in fostering a healthy forest. The fire is roughly 1,300 acres with the final projected acreage of this project at about 2,000 acres.

Weather- Anticipate monsoonal activity with gusty outflowing winds and lightning.
