Multiple Fires on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests

Springerville, AZ—August 6, 2018 The Grama Fire was reported on Tuesday, July 17, 2018. Approximately 16 miles northwest of Forest Lakes, Coconino County, Arizona on the Black Mesa Ranger District in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. The lightning-caused Grama Fire is being managed to fulfill the natural role of fire in the forest ecosystem. The fire is about 1,894 acres burning mostly in ponderosa pine with a timber understory, Gambel oak, and pinon/juniper. Fire crews were not able to finalize the hand ignitions due to moderate precipitation on the fire area. They will take the opportunity today, weather permitting, to complete those operations. The final anticipated project area for the Grama Fire is approximately 2,153 acres.

The Ranch Fire was reported on Tuesday, July 24, 2018. Located about 25 miles south of Winslow, Coconino County, Arizona on the Black Mesa Ranger District in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. The lightning-caused fire is approximately 4,081 acres. Due to the amount of rain that has fallen on the fire area, the acreage has not changed. It is also being managed to attain the natural role of fire in the forest ecosystem. The total completed project area is estimated to be around 11,570 acres. Crews will be monitoring, accessing, and patrolling the perimeter today.

The Hub Point Fire was reported on July 27, 2018. Situated two miles east of Pinedale, Navajo County, Arizona on the Lakeside Ranger District in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. At about 2,600 acres, it is burning in timber, brush and short grass, with moderate fire behavior. Due to the fire receiving modest precipitation over the last few days, crews will be monitoring and patrolling the fire perimeter today. The fire manager’s strategy is to use this lightning-caused fire for multiple objectives in fostering a healthy forest. It is burning in part of the Rodeo-Chediski fire scar, removing some of the dead and down fuels in that area.

Weather- Chances of thunderstorms, winds, and lightning.
