Multiple Fires on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests

Springerville, AZ—August 9, 2018 The Ranch Fire was reported on Tuesday, July 24, 2018. Located about 25 miles south of Winslow, Coconino County, Arizona on the Black Mesa Ranger District in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. Crews were successful using hand ignitions on the south end of the fire yesterday. The lightning-caused fire is approximately 5,281 acres. Pockets of fuel within the fire perimeter continue to burn and if weather permits fire crews will be igniting other islands of fuel as well. It is being managed to attain the natural role of fire in the forest ecosystem. Fire managers hope to reach the projected acreage by this weekend. The total completed project area is estimated to be around 11,570 acres. Smoke will be visible as ignitions are successful.

The Hub Point Fire was reported on July 27, 2018. Situated two miles south of Pinedale, Navajo County, Arizona on the Lakeside Ranger District in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. At about 3,860 acres. In the next few days, fire crews may still be doing some containment line ignitions to clean up dead fuels. Smoke may continue to be visible due to the burning of interior pockets. Smoke should be dissipating over the next day or so.

If heavy smoke is present, those who are more vulnerable should take precautions such as staying inside and avoiding prolonged outside activity. People should keep in mind that smoke impacts can change quickly.
