Winter weather closes some facilities on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests

Release Date: Nov 25, 2013

Springerville, AZ –November 22, 2013—the weather is quickly changing from fall to winter conditions, which has closed more campgrounds and concessionaire operations. In addition, make sure you watch for seasonal closure information of Arizona State Highways 261 and 373 to Big Lake by the Arizona Department of Transportation.

Snow is arriving soon in the higher elevations for the winter outdoor enthusiast. It’s a great time to cut a Christmas Tree (with the purchase of a Christmas tree permit—see below); ski at Sunrise Ski Area or cross-country ski at Pole Knoll Recreation (near Greer) or Williams Valley (near Alpine) for groomed trails. Enjoy other winter and outdoor activities on each of the five ranger districts that make up the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests (ASNFs).

Christmas Tree Permits are being sold at many Big 5 locations in the Phoenix area and at all five ASNFs  Ranger District Offices, as well as, the Mogollon Rim Visitor Center (located on Arizona State Highway 260).  The Rim Visitor Center is open Friday and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through mid-December. Also, check out the Forest website or call the Christmas Tree Hotline at 928-333-6267 for more Christmas Tree Permit information at: www.fs.usda.gov/asnf

“We ask the public to remain patient when buying any permit and BRING driver’s license, state identification or picture identification,” according to ASNFs Forest Supervisor Jim Zornes.
