Apache and Sitgreaves National Forests - Passes and Permits

Forest Products

Gathering of forest products has long been a tradition on National Forest lands. Native Americans and early settlers were dependent upon the products that are now found on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests for their livelihood. Previous generations remember gathering as a necessity. Today, however, it is enjoyed equally as a recreation activity, often partaken with other outdoor activities.

A variety of products can be gathered on the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests. Please check with the local Ranger District Office for information on permits for products from Christmas trees and mistletoe to river rock and fieldstone.

Cutting Season:
The primary season for fuelwood cutting is Summer/Fall. Permits become available after the monsoon season begins each year - after the forest has received enough moisture to reduce wildfire danger. This is generally in Mid-July. All Summer/Fall permits issued will expire no later than December 31 of the year they were issued. Some districts may offer a winter permit, weather and snowpack permitting. These permits generally become available mid to late January and are only available at select districts.  Please call your preferred district for more information on permit availability.  Fuelwood permits are NOT available year-round so please plan ahead for your winter needs.

Reminders:
Personal use fuelwood permits have a limit of ten cords per person per year. The annual cord limit includes both the spring permit and the fall permit. Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) is measured at four-and-a-half feet from the base of the tree at ground level. Only the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests’ District Offices sell fuelwood permits and can accept the following forms of payment: cash, check, and credit card.
