Food Storage Order

The Beaverhead-Deerlodge and Bitterroot National Forests have published Order Number 02-00-22-02 establishing how food items, refuse, animal carcasses or parts thereof or items that may smell like food or refuse are to be stored or secured annually from March 1st through December 1st on National Forest System lands within the Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest, (BDNF), as well as the Anaconda-Pintler Wilderness area within the Bitterroot National Forest.

Many of our developed campgrounds have bear resistant storage containers available.

Food Storage Order R1-2022-02 is also in effect for the area within the Northern Divide Continental Ecosystem, which encompasses the Lolo, Kootenai, Flathead, and parts of the Beaverhead-Deerlodge on the Butte Ranger District and Helena-Lewis and Clark National Forests.

Bear Resistant Products - Loaner Program

Borrow Bear-Resistant containers for FREE from any Beaverhead-Deerlodge district office while you camp on the forest. Contact the district offices for availability of these items.

Items available through the loaner program:

  • Bear-resistant Coolers
  • Bear-resistant Horse Panniers
  • Bear-resistant Backbacker's Barrels (for backpacking)
  • UrSack Bear-resistant bags (for backpacking)

Be Bear Aware Educational Program

The Beaverhead-Deerlodge National Forest's Be Bear Aware program has been active since 2007 and provides presentations to schools and public audiences, fair booths, and information across the forest itself. Be Bear Aware programs can be requested by calling our offices in Butte (406) 494- 2147 or Ennis (406) 682-4253.
