Forest Service Clarifies Highland Lookout Road Closure

Contact(s): Leona Rodreick, Dave Sabo

The Forest Service would like to clarify to visitors who wish to travel the Highland Lookout Road (Forest Road 8514) south of Butte. While the road has been closed since 1989 to motorized use to provide resource protection, it is still accessible to other types of non-motorized travel.

“We are concerned for the safety of people accessing this area with motorized vehicles, said District Ranger Dave Sabo, “However, people may still access the area by foot, bicycle, or horseback.”

This steep, narrow and multiple switchback road is closed by a gate that was vandalized last fall leaving the road open.  Forest crews are in the process of repairing the gate and in the interim reflective barriers have been placed at the gate closure. The Forest Service is asking visitors to respect the closure and not remove the barriers.

For more information contact the Butte Ranger District at (406) 494-2147.
