Reminder: Road to Highland Lookout remains closed to motorized vehicles

Contact(s): Leona Rodreick, Dave Sabo

The Forest Service is reminding visitors who wish to travel the Highland Lookout Road (Forest Road 8514) south of Butte, that the road is closed to motorized vehicles. The road has been closed since 1989 to protect the natural resources in the area, however, it is still accessible to other types of non-motorized travel.

“People are driving their motorized vehicles beyond the closure and I am concerned for their safety said District Ranger Dave Sabo, “the road is narrow with multiple switchbacks and steep drop-offs.  If folks would like to walk, bicycle or horseback beyond the closure to visit the lookout it’s absolutely fine and much safer.”

The road is normally closed by a gate that was vandalized last fall leaving the road open.  Reflective barriers have been placed at the gate closure until Forest crews can replace the gate. The Forest Service is asking visitors to please respect the closure and not remove or drive beyond the barriers.

For more information contact the Butte Ranger District at (406) 494-2147.
