Beal Mountain Mine was an open-pit, cyanide heap-leach gold mine operated by Pegasus Gold Corporation from 1988 through 1998. The 450 acre mine site is located approximately 16 miles west of Butte, MT and is situated on National Forest System lands in the headwaters of German Gulch Creek. Pegasus Gold filed for bankruptcy in 1998 and the existing reclamation bond was insufficient to complete reclamation and closure of the mine. In 2003, the Forest Service opted to use its authority under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act of 1980 (CERCLA) to continue work at the site.
