Volunteer Hosts Needed for Chief Joseph Pass Ski Trails

Contact(s): Leona Rodreick

The Forest Service is looking for volunteers to serve as “hosts” this winter for the Cross Country Ski Trails located at Chief Joseph Pass.  Hosts are based out of the “Gordon Reese Cabin,” a warming hut cross-country skier’s use during the day.  The volunteer host program runs from Dec. 1 through April 15.

Hosts may spend the night in the cabin in exchange for maintaining the facility during the day.  Duties include shoveling snow at the cabin, cleaning the cabin and nearby outhouse, providing hot water for visitors, assisting with emergencies, and answering questions from skiers.

The Wisdom Ranger District will begin taking applications for volunteer hosts starting at 7 a.m. on Thursday, October 20.  To apply, call (406) 689-3371.  This is the only phone number that will reach the cabin host program.  Due to the popularity of the host program, callers are limited to one night’s stay per request, one hosting request per call, and one weekend per season.  Due to overwhelming demand to host the Gordon Reese Cabin, we are only allowing one night per person for the 2011 hosting season.

The Gordon Reese Cabin is located one-half mile north of Highway 43 and in the winter is reached only by cross-country skis or snowshoes.  Please do not bring your dog to the cabin or take them on the trails.

Chief Joseph Pass Cross Country Ski Trails cover 27 kilometers of trails groomed by volunteers from the Bitterroot Cross Country Ski Club.  For more information about the Ski Club go to http://www.bitterrootxcskiclub.net/.  For more information about Chief Joseph Pass or the Gordon Reese Cabin call the Forest Service office in Wisdom at (406) 689-3243.
