Slash pile burns planned for winter 2019-2020

Contact(s): Sara Evans Kirol

Bighorn National Forest fire personnel plan to burn piles of slash this coming winter.  Slash piles are the result of fuels reduction projects either accomplished through timber sales or hand thinning projects.  Typically, the piles need to dry for at least two years prior to ignition.  Larger pile concentrations scheduled for burning are located in the following areas:

•  Powder River District: Poison Creek timber sale and the Canyon Creek timber sale.

•  Tongue District: Babione timber sale near Big Goose, and the Johnson Creek timber sale near Arrowhead Lodge.

Smoke may be visible to communities near the Bighorn National Forest.  When snow is present, there is no need to report smoke observed.

Due to weather conditions, there are no additional planned broadcast prescribed burns as previously shared.  For more information please contact your local Forest Service office.
