The Mystic Ranger District is located in the central portion of the Black Hills National Forest and has an office in Rapid City, SD and a shop located in Hill City, SD.
The district receives as much dispersed recreation and use as any other part of the Black Hills National Forest. It includes special recreation areas such as Pactola Reservoir and Sheridan Lake.
The Mystic Ranger District, or Central Zone, is adjacent to Rapid City, the regional trade center and second largest city in South Dakota, encompasses approximately 350,000 acres interspersed with hundreds of private property parcels and multiple fire departments. The average annual fire load is roughly 40 starts per year. The Black Hills National Forest covers approximately 1.2 million acres, averages roughly 120 starts per year, and is classified high complexity. Additionally, the Mystic Ranger District employs approximately 55 permanent and 40 seasonal employees.
