Spearfish, SD – The Forest’s Construction and Maintenance crew will begin snow plowing approximately 20 miles today thru next week (conditions permitting) in the Defender timber sale area, located near Big Hill and Higgins Gulch on the Northern Hills Ranger District.

Due to heavy equipment, crews working, and potential muddy conditions, officials are asking the public to avoid the area until the plowing is complete and roads dry out.

“Normally roads would be clear this time of year but with late winter conditions we need to plow to accomplish priority work,” said Steve Kozel, Northern Hills District Ranger.

The plowing begins at Big Hill and heads northwest on Forest Service Road (FSR) 214.1F to Higgins Gulch (FSR 214). Crews will plow about ¼ mile north on FSR 214 and south on FSR 214 to Tinton Road. Crews will also be plowing Beaver Ridge Road (FSR 130.1).

Please note that seasonal gate closures remain in effect until May 15. Officials also remind the public to avoid parking in front of closed Forest gates.

Gates are closed to provide a seasonal refuge for wildlife, protect road surfaces and other resources, and provide for public safety.
