Scenic Overlooks

There are many scenic overlooks to discover in the Black Hills, but here are a couple of highlighted areas to get vistors started.

Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak)

Harney Peak

Black Elk Peak (formerly Harney Peak), at 7,242 feet above sea level, is the highest point in the United States east of the Rockies.  From a historic lookout tower on the summit, one has a panoramic view of parts of South Dakota, Nebraska, Wyoming, and Montana, as well as the granite formations and cliffs of the Black Elk Wilderness.  To reach this scenic vista, one must hike trail no. 9S or trail no. 9N, which can take several hours.

Norbeck Overlook

The Norbeck Overlook is located on Iron Mountain southeast of Mount Rushmore National Memorial.  The overlook provides a view of Mount Rushmore from a distance of approximately one mile. To access the overlook from Keystone, drive west on Highway 244 to the junction with US Highway 16A.  Travel south on 16A for approximately four miles.

Breezy Point

A scenic overlook and picnic area, Breezy Point is located along Highway 244, just west of Mt. Rushmore. Visitors can view the Black Elk Wilderness, Mt. Rushmore, Black Elk Peak, and several cities from this spot.
