Permits and Registration

All Wilderness Visitors Need to Obtain the Following Permit:

Family RegisteringAll wilderness visitors to the Black Elk Wilderness must obtain a required Wilderness Visitor Permit before entering the area. Only one permit per group is necessary, and there is no fee for the permits. The self issue Registration boxes are located at each trailhead near information boards. Place the trailhead copy of the permit in the registration box and carry the visitor portion with you while in the wilderness.

It is helpful to have the permit tied to a backpack or saddlebags where Wilderness Rangers can see them. Wilderness permits provide accurate visitor data and are a tool for education and restoration.

For visitor accessing the Wilderness from Custer State Park, a State Park Pass must be purchased and displayed in your vehicle while parking at the trailhead. There is no fee for using any of the other wilderness trailheads.
