Carson National Forest Supervisor James Duran has selected Mark Vigil as the Carson National Forest’s first Business Operations Staff Officer. The new role was developed to oversee an expanded administration function that will support major initiatives like the Enchanted Circle Landscape, which is one of the priorities of the national Wildfire Crisis Strategy.

“I’m excited our team has the opportunity to modernize our administrative support program, which I believe is key to supporting employees with everything from onboarding to maintaining access and understanding of all the centralized agency programs,” said Duran. “Mark is the right person to take our team to the next level of customer service.”

Vigil was born and raised in Taos. After graduating from Taos High School (Go, Tigers!), he enlisted into the United States Army for fours and finished a 30-year career in the New Mexico Army National Guard. During his time in the military, he held positions of increasing responsibility, which led him to his final position as the Command Sergeant Major of the Recruiting and Retention Battalion. He was most recently a talent acquisition and labor relations specialist with Nuclear Newport News/BWXT, a Los Alamos National Laboratory contractor.

“As someone who grew up in Taos, I’m honored to serve the community in this new role for the Carson National Forest,” said Vigil. “I’m especially honored to be chosen to develop and oversee the growth of the business operation.”

His role will include overseeing the forest’s budget and finances, human resources, fleet and front desk operations at the Supervisor’s Office in Taos.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in business management from Excelsior University and recently earned his real estate broker license. His hobbies include enjoying the outdoors in various forms, such as mountain biking and weightlifting.
