Winds Delay Loop Road Prescribed Fire in Valle Vidal

Taos, NM (April 4, 2018) - For Immediate Release. Winds were too high in the Valle Vidal to conduct aerial ignitions or interior burning today. Firefighters will hold what was burned yesterday which amounted to approximately 250 acres along Forest Road 1950. As of 11:00 a.m. this morning, small pockets of trees and brush were smoldering from yesterday’s test burn.

If winds decrease they may continue to burn just along the edge of the road system to create a “blackline.” This narrow blackened or burned area will create a fire break around the perimeter of the burn unit.

It is likely that aerial ignitions and interior burning can start tomorrow as weather conditions look much more favorable. Conditions will be monitored closely and a decision will be made in the morning at the burn site to determine if burning can continue.

For the duration of the prescribed fire, Forest Roads 1910 and 1914 are closed. Forest Road 1950 will be closed to traffic while burning is taking place near the road or while aerial ignitions are occurring near the road.
