Temporary Closure of East Side of Valle Vidal Unit

Taos, NM (June 1, 2018) - For Immediate Release. The east side of the Valle Vidal Unit (Colfax County side) on the Questa Ranger District of the Carson National Forest is closed until further notice. The closure is necessary due to the Ute Park Fire which is south of the Valle Vidal.

The fire has not reached the Valle Vidal Unit but to be proactive and for public health and safety, the forest decided to close the east side in case the fire reaches the forest in the coming days. On the east side of the Valle Vidal, there is a closure on Forest Road (FR) 1950 at the forest boundary. On the west side of the Valle Vidal, there is a closure on FR 1950 at the junction with FR 1910. From that point, the public can travel on FR 1910 to Cimarron Campground, which will remain open. FR 1910 is closed past Cimarron Campground.

McCrystal Campground, Shuree Ponds, and Forest Roads 1940 and 1914 are closed. Also, the entire west side of the Valle Vidal (Taos County side) is already closed due to elk calving through June 30. In this area you are not allowed to leave your vehicle.

Stage 2 fire restrictions are in effect on the entire Carson National Forest. Campfires are not allowed. Only propane grills are allowed in a cleared area. Smoking is allowed in vehicles or building. ATV use is allowed on approved roads and trails.

Although the forest remains open, if conditions worsen, it is possible that the forest may have to be closed but that decision has not been made yet. We appreciate the public abiding by the current fire restrictions and ask for their continued compliance to help protect our natural and cultural resources.

Forest visitors are encouraged to contact the district office in the area they plan to visit to learn what level of fire restrictions are in effect and ask about access to recreation sites.
