Temporary Closure Lifted on East Side of Valle Vidal Unit

Taos, NM (June 6, 2018) - For Immediate Release. The east side of the Valle Vidal Unit (Colfax County side) on the Questa Ranger District of the Carson National Forest is now open There is no longer a threat from the Ute Park Fire which is south of the Valle Vidal.

The entire west side of the Valle Vidal (Taos County side) remains closed due to elk calving through June 30. In this area you are not allowed to leave your vehicle.

Stage 2 fire restrictions are in effect on the entire Carson National Forest. Campfires are not allowed. Only propane grills are allowed in a cleared area. Smoking is allowed in vehicles or buildings. ATV use is allowed on approved roads and trails.

Although the forest remains open, if conditions worsen, it is possible that the forest may have to be closed but that decision has not been made yet. We appreciate the public abiding by the current fire restrictions and ask for their continued compliance to help protect our natural and cultural resources.

Forest visitors are encouraged to contact the district office in the area they plan to visit to learn what level of fire restrictions are in effect and ask about access to recreation sites.
