Maton Fires Determined to be Human Caused

Maton Fires 10-03-19

TAOS, NM – October 10, 2019 – Eighteen different fires being referred to as the Maton Fires on the El Rito Ranger District have been determined to be human caused. The exact cause is unknown and is currently under investigation.

The series of fires were detected on October 1st adjacent to Forest Road 559 above the El Rito Campground. Collectively, they totaled 105 acres and were 100% contained as of Monday, October 7th. The quick response by firefighters prevented the fires from growing into a much larger area.

These fires unnecessarily put firefighters and the public at risk. Anyone with information about the cause of these fires is asked to call the Forest Service at 505-438-5383.

We are continuing to monitor the fire area for any lingering heat. It is possible to see some residual smoke throughout this week.
