2001 Projects

The following outlines the 2001 operating plan for the Copper River International Migratory Bird Initiative. The first year of the initiative will focus on three goals:

1) Implement four cooperative research/education projects on the Copper River Delta (study plans and proposals are available on request).

2) Complete an Initiative Strategic Plan and a framework for plan implementation.

3) Develop new migratory bird conservation partnerships.

These three goals will be implemented by the following projects:

Electronic Field Trip for Alaska’s Shorebird Migration
We will fund the development of an innovative tool focused on the conservation of shorebirds and their reliance on critical wetland habitats. The project entails developing an “electronic “ field trip to the Copper River Delta and Mexico, Alaska during the peak of the shorebird migration in the spring of 2002. This live field trip will be broadcast to classrooms across the nation via satellite TV. The program will reach an estimated 500,000 school children across the country and hemisphere. For additional information go to: http://shorebirds.pwnet.org

Synthesis of 15 years of Research by Yale University on the Copper River Delta
Yale University is currently completing the last piece of 15 years of research on the basic ecophysiology of the Copper River Delta in Alaska. A synthesis of past research into a publication by a post-doctoral research associate will be completed. This publication will provide much-needed information for management. For example, the information may allow us to predict the rate and direction of habitat change on the delta and to anticipate habitat management needs that may arise in association with those changes.
