Anchorage, AK, (November 5, 2018) — The Chugach National Forest Avalanche Information Center is making preparations for the winter season and asking backcountry users to ‘Know Before You Go’ and learn more about avalanche awareness. Governor Bill Walker has proclaimed November as Avalanche Education Awareness Month. The proclamation notes that Alaskans benefit from avalanche education and are encouraged to use information available from the Chugach National Forest Service Avalanche Information Center in addition to other sources.

The best way to stay safe is to get avalanche training, know the conditions, carry rescue gear, including an avalanche beacon, shovel, and probe, and make safe terrain choices. The Chugach National Forest Avalanche Center helps backcountry users follow the Governor’s recommendations by offering a number of avalanche workshops and awareness events that are open to the public.
