Southwest Area Type 1 Team Managing Bluewater and Diener Canyon Fires

Release Date: Apr 14, 2018

April 14, 12:00 p.m.

The Type 1 Southwest Area Incident Management Team – Team 2 – led by Incident Commander John Pierson, assumed command of the Bluewater fire and Diener Canyon fire as of 6AM this morning. The Diener Canyon Fire is burning on Mount Sedgwick within the old fire scar from 2004. The Bluewater fire is located approximately 4 miles north of the Diener Canyon Fire on Salitre Mesa.

Both fires started on Thursday, April 12. The official cause of the Bluewater Fire was an abandoned campfire. The exact cause of the Diener Canyon fire is currently being investigated. High winds on Friday did cause both fires to increase in size. The Bluewater Fire is now 1,898 acres, and the Diener Canyon is 3,300 acres.

Firefighters are focusing on securing the north and east sides of both fires while the winds are coming out of the northwest.  The objective is to put measures in place to protect Bluewater Acres, Bluewater Village, La Jara Subdivision, and other private inholdings before the winds shift in a few days which will come out of the southwest.

Two helicopters will be utilized today for water drops unless winds get too high.  Winds will be lighter today than in the past two days, ranging from 15-20 MPH gusting up to 25 MPH.

Residents of Bluewater Subdivision, Bluewater Acres, Bluewater Village and La Jara Subdivision continue to be on Pre-Evacuation notice.  These residents have been asked to be prepared to leave at a moment’s notice if an evacuation order is issued.  In this event, an evacuation center will be located at Grants High School while the Grants Rodeo Grounds can be used to house livestock.
