Albuquerque, NM, Mar 18, 2019 – Last year, following Balloon Fiesta, the La Luz trailhead and parking area and Forest Service road 333A were closed for reconstruction. Made possible through funding from the Federal Highway Administration’s Federal Lands Transportation Program (FLTP), reconstruction work will include increasing the number of available parking spaces, improving traffic flow, and improvement of associated trailhead facilities and signage.

“The la Luz Trailhead is very popular and we are eager to enhance the trailhead facilities for the public. I know this period of closure will inconvenience some members of the public and I ask that you have patience as we make these improvements.” - Crystal Powell, Sandia District Ranger

The reconstruction and closure period is expected to last through late April or early May, 2019,   due to weather conditions and the resulting construction delays.  While closed, the public may continue to access the La Luz Trail #137 via the Piedra Lisa-La Luz Link Trail #137C (starting at the Piedra Lisa trailhead), or a newly constructed link trail starting at the Juan Tabo Picnic Area. Additionally, while the trailhead is closed, traffic will be routed one-way through the picnic area.
