FLAGSTAFF, Ariz., April 23, 2018, For Immediate Release — Coconino National Forest fire managers are planning a prescribed burn today on the Flagstaff Ranger District, and more throughout this week, because of the precipitation received Friday which created favorable conditions for burning. These burns could be canceled or postponed if conditions change.

Upper Lake Burn Project

  • When: Planned ignitions will begin today at approximately 9 a.m.
  • Where: 15 miles southeast of Flagstaff, south end of Upper Lake Mary at Pine Grove Campground. (35°01'55.6"N 111°27'43.5"W)
  • Size: 1,145 acres.
  • Smoke impacts: Smoke may be seen by motorists on Lake Mary Road south of Flagstaff and any visitors at Upper Lake Mary, and at Pine Grove Campground during the day. Cooling temperatures in the evenings may cause smoke to settle and drain down nearby canyons and low lying areas. Smoke will likely appear thicker the morning after the burn as it settles overnight and should dissipate by early the next afternoon.

Mint Burn Project

  • When: Planned aerial and ground ignitions Wednesday and Thursday begin at approximately 9 a.m.
  • Where: One mile south of Mormon Lake, along the west side of Lake Mary Road. (34°53'47.1"N 111°26'34.6"W)
  • Size: Up to 3,500 acres total, broken down into daily manageable blocks.
  • Smoke impacts: Smoke may be seen by motorists on Lake Mary Road south of Mormon Lake. Cooling temperatures in the evenings may cause smoke to settle and drain down nearby canyons and low lying areas. Smoke will likely appear thicker the morning after the burn as it settles overnight and should dissipate by early the next afternoon.

Prescribed burns are always dependent upon weather and wind conditions, as well as approval from Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ). The public can view approved prescribed burns on ADEQ’s website at smoke.azdeq.gov. Burns on the Coconino National Forest begin with the forest’s designator “COF.”
