Snowmobile Information
The Flagstaff Ranger District can be a great place to enjoy your snowmobile. Much of the district is open to over snow motorized travel provided there is adequate snow coverage as to not cause natural resource damage. There are some areas, such as wilderness, that are closed to all motorized travel. Please refer to the Over-Snow Motor Vehicle Use Map. Be alert for dog sledders, cross country skiers and other winter sport enthusiasts.
During winter months many of the forest roads are closed to motorized use, with the exception of over snow vehicles such as snowmobiles. With gates to many forest roads closed this can provide some difficulty accessing the forest in some areas. Suggested parking areas provided on this page will likely have closed/locked gates to negotiate and some areas are not plowed for parking.
These areas are home to elk, deer, coyote, porcupine, squirrels and other animals. Keep in mind that these animals need to conserve energy over the long winter months. Chasing animals, needlessly revving engines and other similar behavior uses valuable energy reserves of the animals, risks your well-being and lessens your outdoor experience. Enjoy wildlife from a distance and ride responsibly.
