Tallulah Falls Road Line Branch Culvert Replacement

What do I need to know?

The Chattooga River Ranger District of the Chattahoochee-Oconee National Forests is proposing to replace an existing culvert under Tallulah Falls Road, also known as Forest Service Road 70 and Tate City Road. The exact location of the proposed project is 34°56’52.35 N/83°33’06.91” W, approximately 875 feet north of the Towns County line. One lane of the road will remain open for traffic usage during construction.

The purpose of the project is to replace an existing failing culvert with a larger culvert that will be able to control large volumes of water within Line Branch during storm and high rainfall events. Headwalls with riprap will also be installed. The existing culvert has proven to be insufficient and has caused the road to wash away in areas. The gravel roadway will be expanded from approximately 14 feet in width to approximately 20 feet in width with the project area. The existing round metal culvert is 4.8’ by 2.8’. The new proposed culvert is a 3-sided aluminum box culvert that measures 13’3” by 6’9”.

Construction is estimated to take approximately 3 months, weather dependant. Construction will occur during daylight hours only. The road and culvert will be maintained by the US Forest Service. We are currently in the process of determining the significant environmental issues and public concerns.  You can help us in completing our analysis by providing comments on this proposal as we have described it.
