Who Can Order Materials From the Symbols Cache?

Only approved agency and partner customers can purchase Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl materials. Image protection is legally mandated and essential to maintain the integrity of the Smokey Bear and Woodsy Owl icons. These symbols are protected by law under 16 U.S.C. 580 p - 4 and 18 U.S.C. 711a. The access code is one measure the US Forest Service National Symbols Program takes to protect these icons from inappropriate use.

The US Forest Service, State Agencies, U.S. Department of Interior Agencies, the Canadian Forestry Association, fire departments, school teachers, and other authorized groups are all appropriate customers for Symbols Cache products. Contact your USFS Regional Cooperative Wildfire Prevention (CFFP) or Conservation Education (CE) Coordinator to see whether you can be an authorized customer.

What Educational Materials Are Available?

Symbols Cache materials are focused on three categories:

Smokey Bear

To better meet our customers' needs, the array of items in this chapter was chosen by an interagency task force representing a variety of our customers. These items were chosen to target our key audience of 5 to 10-year-old kids, as well as educators, homeowners in the wildland/urban interface, large special-event audiences, and agency personnel.

Woodsy Owl

Help spread Woodsy's message: "Lend a Hand-Care for the Land!", and highlight his themes of "Give a Hoot-Don't Pollute!" and the four R's: reduce, reuse, recycle, and rot (composting). Woodsy's target audience are children 5 to 8 years old, but is loved by other age groups.

The National Symbols Program offers Woodsy Owl promotional items chosen by an interagency task force representing a variety of our customers. These products make it possible to introduce Woodsy Owl with or without a costume appearance.

Fire Education

You do not need to have an access code to purchase Fire Education materials. Any entity can purchase these materials. As with other National Symbols items, these products cannot be resold. The Firehouse, holds the copyright for the Fire Education Tteam materials and artwork.

The Fire Education Team materials were developed by the Department of the Interior in response to changes in our understanding, application and management of wildland fire. Many of the products are geared for use by teachers in the classroom. Topics include wildland fire ecology, fire behavior, fire suppression, recreational and home fire safety, wildland/urban fire protection and more. The Fire Education Team provides educational products for elementary ages, and the Fire Role in Nature series can be used for teenagers and adults.
