Sierra Vista Ranger District hosts National Get Outdoors Day event June 9

Tucson, AZ, June 4, 2018 - For Immediate Release. The Sierra Vista Ranger District will celebrate National Get Outdoors Day Saturday, June 9 at Parker Canyon Lake from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. National Get Outdoors Day is intended to encourage children to recreate outdoors, and all activities (except use of marina facilities) will be free-of-charge.


Arizona Game and Fish Department will host a fishing clinic as part of their statewide Sport Fishing Education Program, which teaches introductory fishing skills to people of all ages. Fishing programs are led by Department Sport Fishing Education staff and program-certified instructors. All educational materials, rods and reels, bait and terminal tackle are provided at no charge. Topics of instruction include: where and when to fish; selecting tackle and bait; casting and rigging techniques; fishing safety and ethics; care of your catch and much more. The Sport Fishing Education Program is composed of two parts: Open-to-the-Public Family Fishing Events and the School Group Fishing Program. As part of the celebration, Forest personnel will engage children in a variety of interactive outdoor learning experiences.  Additional activities include an archaeology box from Fort Huachuca Cultural Resources, live snakes from the Huachuca Area Herpetological Association, rock and mineral specimens from Huachuca Mineral and Gem Club, and a BB-gun range from the National Wild Turkey Federation. Other partners include Kartchner Caverns State Park; the National Park Service, Coronado National Memorial; Sit Means Sit; Tucson Audubon Society and U.S. Border Patrol, Sonoita Station. National Get Outdoor Day is a “fee free” day for Lakeview Campground. Fees will not be waived at the marina.
