Sawmill Fire ignition video released

Tucson, AZ (November 27, 2018) – For Immediate Release. A video of the Sawmill Fire ignition in 2017 was released by the USDA Forest Service on November 27, 2018, in response to a Freedom of Information Act Request.

The video can be viewed at https://www.fs.usda.gov/detail/r3/news-events/?cid=FSEPRD604071

This video shows the ignition of the Sawmill Fire which burned on Coronado National Forest and other lands in April, 2017.

An explosive material was shot with a firearm, and sparks landing in surrounding dry grass ignited instantly.

This serves to demonstrate the volatile conditions which can be present across the Forest during any time of the year, and how quickly a wildfire can be ignited from any spark introduced to receptive fuel.
