What is an interactive MVUM?

Interactive MVUM’s use your mobile devices’ GPS to locate you on a digital MVUM map. All you need to start using interactive MVUM’s is an internet connected mobile device such as a smartphone or tablet and the PDF Maps App.

What application do I need to download in order to use interactive MVUM’s?

The Forest Service has partnered with Avenza’ s PDF Maps App which can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store and the Google Play store.

What else can I do besides track myself on a map?

You can also add waypoints find distances between them, manually enter GPS coordinates and plot photos to specific coordinates on the MVUM.

Does this application require cellular service?

No, once you ‘ve downloaded the application and your desired map you do not need to have cellular service to locate yourself on the MVUM; only the GPS function on your phone needs to be enabled.

Are the official Forest Service Visitor Use Maps available for the PDF Maps App?

Yes, however each visitor use map costs $4.99 to download. You can search for them by clicking the “Store” tab while in the app and typing “Caribou-Targhee National Forest” in the search box.

Are printed MVUM’s still available?

Yes, printed MVUM’s are still available at any district office free of charge. For a list of district offices click the, “About the Forest” tab on the left side of your screen.
