The Proposed Action is available for formal comment from January 3 - March 5, 2018.  There are several options available for commenting. 

You are invited to review the proposed action.  It is a starting place for the revised Forest Plan for the Custer Gallatin National Forest.  The document reflects extensive public involvement over the past two years through informational sessions, collaborative working group meetings both virtual and in-person, public meetings, e-collaboration, written submissions and other public input.

When commenting, we ask you to please be specific and include supporting rationale.  This helps the team as they analyze the comments.

Submitting Comments

Options for Commenting:

  1. Highly Recommended due to number of comments anticpated: Online through Online Commenting Tool
  2. Via email at with subject line - "Comment draft plan - CGNF"
  3. By mail or hand delivery: Custer Gallatin National Forest, Attn:  Forest Plan Revision Team, P.O. Box 130, (10 E Babcock), Bozeman, MT 59771
  4. At local open house/public meeting by placing in comment box/envelope.  Must be written and submitted.

Comments on the Custer Gallatin proposed action must be received or postmarked within 60 days of the Federal Register's publication of the Notice of Intent to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement.  It is important to provide your comments at such times and manners to be useful to the preparation of the draft environmental impact statement. 


Please provide comments prior to the close of the comment period and clearly state your concerns or issues.  Comments received, including names and addresses will be part of the public record.  Comments submitted anonymously will be accepted and considered but will not provide the respondent with standing tom participate in subsequent administrative or judicial reviews.

The decision to approve the revised plan for the Custer Gallatin National Forest will be subject to the objection process identified in 36 CFR Part 219 Subpart B (219.50 to 219.62).  The Forest Supervisor will be the deciding officer (36 CFR 219.56(3)(2)) for the revised plan, and accordingly, the Regional Forester will be the reviewing officer. 

Only those individuals and entities who have submitted substantive formal comment related to the Custer Gallatin National Forest plan revision during the opportunities provide for the public comment will be eligible to file an objection (36 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 219.53(a)).

Submitting Comments for Species of Conservation Concern

Please submit your comments on the Custer Gallatin National Forest Species of Conservation Concern using the same process and timeframes that the Custer Gallatin National Forest has established for commenting on their proposed action.  The Custer Gallatin National Forest will forward your Species of Conservation Concern comments to the Regional Forester.  The Regional Forester will determine how to incorporate your comments.  Please note the Regional Forester must use best available scientific information to identify Species of Conservation Concern. 

Because the Regional Forester identified Species of Conservation Concern for the Custer Gallatin National Forest, the Chief of the Forest Service, or his delegation, will be the reviewing officer for objections or parts of objections received specific to the identification of Species of Conservation Concern (36 CFR 219.56(e)(2)).
