International Day of Forests to be Celebrated in El Yunque

Under the motto, “Learn to Love El Yunque”, the Friends of El Yunque Foundation (Fundación Amigos de El Yunque) will celebrate the International Day of Forests on Saturday, March 23, 2019, at the parking area of El Portal Visitor Center in El Yunque National Forest.


The event, which encourages appreciation for the conservation of the environment and natural resources, will include the participation of around 20 organizations along with artisans, musical and cultural groups. Attendees can participate in demonstrations, tours, talks and activities on various topics such as: climate change, recycling, flora and fauna of the forest, tree planting, sustainable practices, and the relationship and ecological connections of the mountains to the coast, amongst other topics.


In addition, other activities will be carried out at El Portalito:Hub Palmer, including the temporary exhibition of Smokey the Bear, in commemoration of its 75th anniversary. El Portalito is located at #54 Calle Principal, Palmer, Rio Grande.


This event is part of the celebration of the International Day of Forests proclaimed by the United Nations to educate and raise awareness about the importance of forest conservation and the benefits they provide.


The activity will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., is free of charge and can count for hours of the "Contacto Verde" Program as established under Act No. 36-2015 and the public policy of the Puerto Rico Department of Education. El Portal Visitor Center is located on road. 191 Km. 4.0, Rio Grande.
