Personal safety is sometimes overlooked when you're in the woods and enjoying recreation activities, but the same savvy you use on city streets apply. Plan your day and note cues around you to ensure you stay safe while enjoying the outdoors. Keep in mind that cell phone service is sporadic to non-existant in many areas of our National Forests in Florida.

Basic trip planning
- Obtain a map of the area you are visiting.
- Become familiar with the area.
- Contact the ranger station or visitor centers for specific information.
- Tell a friend where you are going and when you plan to return.
- Make sure your vehicle is in good running condition and has plenty of fuel.
- Be prepared in case you get stranded; take extra food and warm clothing.
- Be prepared for the night; have a flashlight.
- Obtain the correct numbers for the local sheriff's office.
- Carry identification or your name, phone number, and blood type information on your person.
