Local Area

Klamath Falls LandscapeThe Winema Hotshot Crew is located in south central Oregon on the Fremont-Winema National Forests. The crew is based at the Klamath Ranger District in the city of Klamath Falls. Crewmembers are responsible for their own lodging as agency housing is not available. However, the cost of living in Klamath Falls is considered fairly inexpensive.

The city of Klamath Falls, the Klamath County seat, is located on the south shore of Upper Klamath Lake, the largest body of water in Oregon. Klamath Falls is set within the Klamath Basin, where a full service community provides a home to approximately 45,000 people. It is also the location of the primary Oregon Institute of Technology and Klamath Community College campuses.

Because of its Native American, pioneering, logging, and railroading past, Klamath County is littered with historic points of interest. Unique facilities like Collier Memorial State Park bring local history to life by providing visitors a firsthand look at authentic logging and railroading equipment. They also host a relocated pioneer village.

Klamath Falls averages about 300 days of sunshine yearly, providing four-season outdoor recreation. Popular activities include hiking, backpacking, mountain biking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and snow and water skiing.

Wildlife also plays a big part in Klamath County recreational activities. There are several State of Oregon and federal wildlife refuges in the immediate area. Between bird migration route convergence, and the largest population of wintering bald eagles in the contiguous United States, bird watching is a common pastime. There are also many opportunities for the hunting and fishing of game species.

Available local entertainment includes a live performance venue (the Ross Ragland Theater) and several destination resorts.
