Lakeview, Oregon - After Monday and Tuesday's thunderstorm activities, interagency fire crews have been responding to smoke reports on lands managed by the Fremont-Winema National Forests, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Lakeview District, Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF), National Park Service and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

As of 9 a.m., the Lakeview Interagency Fire Center (LIFC) confirmed 12 lightning fires in Klamath County and 11 in Lake County.

“The last couple of days, firefighters have done great job containing fires and keeping the majority of them to an acre or less,” said Bob Crumrine, Deputy Interagency Fire Staff Officer for the BLM Lakeview District and Fremont-Winema National Forest. "However, the challenge today will be locating fires not yet detected.” Reconnaissance flights and fire lookouts will continue to search for sleeper fires throughout the week.

Please remember, when leaving a campfire, make certain that all burned material (like wood) and ashes are doused with water, dirt and cold to the touch. Firefighters continue to find unattended campfires that have spread outside of where they originated.

Fire danger throughout south central Oregon remains extreme. Fire officials also ask the public to be familiar with the public use restrictions in place for the areas they plan to recreate.
