Lakeview, Oregon – As a result of recent thunderstorm activities, interagency fire crews have been responding to multiple reports of wildfires throughout south central Oregon.  As of noon today, the Lakeview Interagency Fire Center (LIFC) confirmed 29 wildfires; 22 in Klamath County and seven in Lake County.

“Considering the great number of wildfires we're getting, our interagency wildland firefighting resources have been very successful in containing and controlling these fires," said Bob Crumrine, Deputy Interagency Fire Staff Officer for the BLM Lakeview District and Fremont-Winema National Forest. "Despite the extremely dry vegetation and precarious weather conditions, we've been very fortunate to utilize multiple aircraft to assist firefighting operations on the ground". Aircraft availability may diminish as wildfires in other parts of the country need them.

Of the current wildfires in Klamath County, two are of special note:

  • The Launch Fire, reported to be at 75 acres, is located in the Sky Lakes Wilderness.  An Incident Management Team (IMT) 2 has been ordered to take over management of the incident. The roads and trails in that area are currently closed to public access, including the Great Meadows Sno-Park currently being used as a helibase for the helicopters on the incident.
  • The Pumice Flat Fire is approximately 25 acres, located in the Crater Lake National Park. Numerous spot fires have been reported and fire crews continue to be dispatched to those locations. The South Central Oregon Fire Management Partnership IMT 3 has management of the fire.

Persistent lightning activity is expected throughout this week. Today, the National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning from 2-11:00 p.m. The forecast includes continued hot and extremely dry conditions.
