Wilderness Regulations

Nation-wide Wilderness Regulations

The following prohibitions apply to all Wildernesses:

  • Possessing or using a motor vehicle, motorboat, or motorized equipment.
  • Possessing or using a bicycle or hang glider. Landing an aircraft, or dropping or picking up of any material, supplies, or persons by means of an aircraft, including a helicopter.

Wilderness Specific Regulations

Gearhart Mountain Wilderness

  • Pack & Saddle animals are not permitted within 200 ft of Blue Lake or any stream.
  • Check at the Ranger Stations for fire restrictions.

Mountain Lakes Wilderness

  • Group size is limited to 10 people and/or stock in any combination.
  • Check at the Ranger Stations for fire restrictions.

Mt. Thielsen Wilderness

  • Use of the Fremont-Winema National Forest part of Mount Thielsen Wilderness by a group of more than 6 people and 9 pack and saddle stock is prohibited, except on Maidu Lake Trail #1446.
  • Use of Maidu Lake Trail #1446, and the Umpqua National Forest area by a group of more than 20 units, including pack and saddle stock, with a maximum of 12 people and 8 stock or 12 stock and 8 people.
  • Pack & Saddle animals are not permitted within 200 ft of any stream
  • Check at the Ranger Stations for fire restrictions

Sky Lakes Wilderness

  • In Seven Lakes Basin and Blue Canyon Basin designated horse-camps must be used. Horses and the Sky Lakes Wilderness brochure (691 KB PDF) provides details on these camps.
  • Group size is limited to no more than 8 people and 12 stock
  • Campsites and fires prohibited within 100 feet of a lake, 50 feet of a stream or spring
  • Stock is not to be hitched, tethered or grazed within 200 feet of a water source
  • Check at the Ranger Stations for fire restrictions.
