Gifford Pinchot National Forest seeking new recreation event proposals

Gifford Pinchot National Forest seeking new recreation event proposals

Release Date: September 3, 2019

Contact: Brittany Zapata, (360) 449-7806

Group kayak floats, snowmobile or ski events, endurance races, a hike-a-thon fundraiser, horse competitions, and bike races are all examples of unique ways to enjoy the Gifford Pinchot National Forest.  The forest is currently seeking proposals for new and existing recreation events for the 2020 calendar year.  Proposals will be accepted through November 1, 2019.

A total of twenty-five permits for recreation events will be available.  If there are more applications than permits available, the forest will use a lottery system to identify proposals for further consideration.  Events should encourage fun and responsible outdoor recreation experiences.

All new proposals will be reviewed under criteria intended to diversify recreation opportunities, reduce overlap with existing events, and increase opportunities for youth-focused events.  Events under existing permits must also submit applications during this period.  At this time the forest is not accepting new trail runs on the Truman Trail, Boundary Trail, Loowit Trail, or within the Mount Margaret Backcountry.

Detailed information and applications are available on the forest website:

Please contact Brittany Zapata at (360) 449-7806 with questions about criteria and the permitting process.  Applicants are also encouraged to contact Brittany before developing new proposals.
